Peter and the Wolf
Sample Study Unit

Introduction:

In this study unit, students will use music to learn English language. The main objective is to introduce students to the story and characters of "Peter and the Wolf" and to help them develop their English language skills. Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic fairytale "Peter and the Wolf" is a great way to achieve this objective. Prokofiev composed the music in 1936 and it tells the story of a young boy named Peter, who goes on an adventure in the forest to catch a wolf. To start the study unit, the teacher will introduce the concept of using music to learn English and provide a brief background on Sergei Prokofiev and "Peter and the Wolf". The students will then watch a video clip of the symphony being performed.

Vocabulary and Listening Comprehension:

In this section of the study unit, the teacher will teach the students the key vocabulary words and phrases that are used in the story. The teacher will explain the meaning of words such as "forest", "wolf", "bird", "cat", "grandfather", "hunters", etc. The teacher will then play the symphony for the students and ask them to listen for the different musical themes that represent each character. The teacher will use the symphony to reinforce listening comprehension skills by asking the students questions about what they heard and what they think is happening in the story.

Reading and Writing Activities:

In this section of the study unit, the teacher will provide the students with a copy of the story and ask them to read it silently or out loud. The teacher will ask the students to write a summary of the story in their own words, using the vocabulary and phrases they have learned. The teacher will use the story to teach grammar and sentence structure by asking the students to identify different parts of speech (e.g. nouns, verbs, adjectives) and construct sentences using them.

Creative Activities:

In this section of the study unit, the teacher will encourage the students to use their creativity and imagination to explore the story of "Peter and the Wolf". The teacher will encourage the students to create their own illustrations for the story or act out the different characters and scenes. The teacher will also have the students create their own musical compositions inspired by "Peter and the Wolf", using different instruments and themes to represent different characters.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, this study unit on English language through music, using Sergei Prokofiev's symphonic fairytale "Peter and the Wolf", is a great way to help students develop their English language skills while also introducing them to the story and characters of "Peter and the Wolf". The teacher will wrap up the study unit by asking the students to share their favorite parts of the story or the music, and how they enjoyed learning English through music.
